If you’ve ever talked to us about dining in Cleveland, you’ll know that we’re big fans of the The Greenhouse Tavern. Our enthusiasm goes beyond their fantastic food and innovative menu, and extends to an appreciation of their Slow Food-friendly philosophy towards sourcing. We’ve had the pleasure of showing their Chef, Jonathan Sawyer, around Columbus and have enjoyed sampling the fruits of his collaborations with Columbus chefs and food businesses.
We’re thrilled to be able to offer you the chance to win two free tickets for a special event dinner at The Greenhouse Tavern on Tuesday June 18th, in which The Greenhouse Tavern will collaborate with Daniel Vaughn, the author of “The Prophets of Smoked Meat: A Journey Through Texas Barbecue”. The full menu has not been announced, but it promises to include not only The Greenhouse Tavern’s renown BBQ half pig face but also a Whole Roasted Ohio Certified Angus cow’s head.
Daniel Vaughn started as a blogger chronicling his love of BBQ on his website “Full Custom Gospel BBQ,” He’s now the barbecue editor for Texas Monthly, a position created especially for him, and is Anthony Bourdain’s go-to guy for barbecue expertise (you may have seen him on the Austin episode of “No Reservations” that aired last fall). Vaughn’s book “The Prophets of Smoked Meat: A Journey Through Texas Barbecue” ($29.99, Anthony Bourdain/Ecco), chronicles his 10,000-mile journey with photographer Nicholas McWhirter across Texas searching for the best brisket, sausage and ribs. This man has eaten a lot of barbecue, his blog has reviewed over 600 BBQ joints and the book includes reviews of more than 200 restaurants in Texas as well as recipes from the best pit masters.
To enter the competition for two free tickets, just let us know what your favorite smoked meat is in the comments below. We’ll pick a winner on Tuesday June 11th at 5pm. You must be free on Tuesday evening June 18th and able to be in Cleveland at 6pm.
Please not that, although The Greenhouse makes fantastic vegetarian food, this particular event is (fairly self-evidently) not suitable for vegetarians.

I live and love in a meatless marriage, so just because of rarity, all smoked meat is my favorite. I hope I win and can refine my favorites list with a friend!

Bacon is a very obvious answer, but it’s really hard to deny. I dig a smoked hot link as often as I can get my hands on one, however.
June 7, 2013
My favorite smoked meat is pulled pork.

I kid you not, the 18th of June is the ONLY date on my June calendar that has nothing on it so far. I would love to drive to CLE to eat smoked meat!
I’m partial to my dad’s pulled pork.

I’m partial to rib tips myself–chewy, smoky, and you’ve got to put some work into eating them, but so worth it.

I love a lot of smoked things- but by far my favorite is Brisket! When it’s smoked perfectly with the crusty outside and the smoked ring goodness inside – its just amazing. I bought my husband a smoker for our anniversary 2 years ago (6/17) and we’ve been smoking meat, cheese, and anything else we can think of ever since! Love it!

My husband makes the most amazing bacon! Pretty much everything tastes better when it has been smoked – turkey, cheese, brats, pork, brisket!
June 7, 2013
Smoked chicken wings! For the record,, Greenhouse Tavern served me the most amazing confit chicken wings of my life.
June 7, 2013
Anything from RayRay’s, but especially the grass-fed brisket.

Tri-tip all day, then maybe hog wings – the lower rear legs of a pig.

I LOVE smoked turkey legs. I wish they were served at Thanksgiving…

June 10, 2013
I love ribs. They are sublime and involve gnawing on bones.
June 10, 2013
Smoked meat is heaven on earth. Cooking can be an art form and smoking is at the top of the list. The time and attention to detail that goes along with smoking is extensive especially when you talk about brisket. To smoke a meat properly that is naturally more dry than other cuts is not easy but produces something special.
June 10, 2013
Smoked pulled chicken, although I love all kinds of smoked meat!
June 10, 2013
Homemade bacon followed by pork shoulder.
June 10, 2013

Smoke me up a brisket, Texas style, please!
June 10, 2013
I am a huge fan of Swoop! Food Truck’s handmade lamb bacon. But smoked turkey is a very close second.
June 11, 2013
Pork! Nothing reminds me of summer more than a good BBQ with some pulled pork, potato salad, and a nice, cold beer! This event sounds amazing. Excited to have you both in Cleveland! My fiancé and I took your taco truck tour on Cinco de Mayo and have been planning a return to Columbus to take another tour!
